Simultaneous High/Low Beam Headlights

Submitted By: Jason - XtremeGT@BerettaStuff.com - Thanks!

What this does is leaves the low beams on when you turn on the high beams giving you more visibility.

I was always told to write instructions as if a child were reading them. You experienced people will think I might be explaining too much about relays but remember there are a lot of people here that don't know very much about cars and there components. Please bare with me.

What you need:
- relay: high current
- 3' of wire, preferably low gauge for high current
-whatever you want for wire connectors: twist on cap, crimp, electrical tape, solder, ect.

You can get a relay from any autoparts store. It is best to get the highest amperage, this will make your lights slightly brighter. Connecting diagram is on the back of the relay box.

On fig. 1 I used #1 for output and #2 for input, the one that goes to a switch. This may or may not be the same order as on the relay you get. The relay I got had 5 prongs and 1 was not used.

Connect #1 to the positive side of the lowbeams.
Connect #2 to the positive side of the high beams.
Connect positive directly to battery with an inline fuse and ground to ground of course.

How this works: Relays use current flowing from a switch of some sort (in this case the current from the high beams) to activate the flow of current from another source. Current cannot flow in reverse through the relay. This stops the high beams from cutting on with the lowbeams. The high beams still run off the same wire but the relay does too. The relay does not interfere with the high beams at all.

This is what you have when you are done. Fig. 2. (Fig. 2 will be up as soon as I get a picture of my headlights for Mike)

Notes:
-Before starting any electrical project it is wise to disconnect the battery.
-Best if relay is on drivers side to be closer to the battery.
-Only need 1 relay for this mod
-Use a volt meter to determine which wires from the lights are positive. Do this by removing the bulbs, turn on the headlights and test. Mine were the colored ones, green and orange I think, and the black ones were negative.
-May not be legal in your state, I nor this web site hold any responsibility for anything that results in you doing this mod.
-You can use this mod on other things too like turning on hidden extra fog lights with the high beams (in VA it is illegal to have more than 1 pair of fogs)
